Komorebi

This modest Utah mountain retreat blends elements of Mountain Modern and traditional Japanese design, resulting in a bespoke custom home that functions as accommodation, workspace, and residential refuge rolled into one. Central to the client’s desire was to capture feelings of comfort, enjoy natural daylight in the morning, and feel connected to the natural landscape. The name Komorebi—Japanese for “sunlight through the trees”—encapsulates the direction of the design. The home is wrapped by an external engawa and an internal hall, giving access to all rooms from the common concourse. A lightwell, dramatic open staircase, and skylights enliven the experience as you move from the public front areas of the home to more private bedrooms or the library nook tucked away from the activity of the living room and kitchen. The master bedroom is elevated to the second level, allowing it to be secluded from the rest of the home. Exterior movable screens let the owners control the influx of daylight on the western face during the spring and fall months.
